Fishing gear and methods
Fishing in the Sciacca fisheries is of the artisanal – close-up type. The methods traditionally used are those suitable for catching prey on rocky seabeds and posidonia beds, i.e. gillnets and longlines. Minor activities have developed alongside these. The activity of small-scale fishing is strongly influenced by the nature and morphology of the coastline, in the sense that it is more profitable in areas with hard substrates or on bottoms where there are roughness.
Operators use a variety of fishing gear according to the seasons, the feeding, reproductive and ethological habits of the species they catch and the morphology of the sea bed. In coastal areas with more intense tourism, fishing activities are shared with those supporting seaside.
